The REACT Books and Print Sandbox launched today at the Pervasive Media Studio with eight new projects exploring the new frontiers of publishing and the changing nature of books and other printed media. You can find out about all eight projects on the Books and Print section of the REACT website.

The DCRC team are variously taking holiday and engaging in research activities away from desks and so we are offering an overview of some of our summertime activities in this post. Normal service for weekly blogging will return in September.

The week auspiciously ending the 13th of July was also the 149th week of the operation of the DCRC. The week brought workshops on books & print and smart cities, as well as talks on gamification, interactive documentary and a visit from the university's board of governors. 149 years ago in 1863 the first section of the London Underground opened and the International Committee of the Red Cross was founded. In week 149, the DCRC and the Centre for Fine Print Research held a two-day workshop on the future of the book and contributed to the Open City programme for the European Capital of Culture Guimarães 2012.

The final week of June and the 147th of the DCRC continued conversations about the next academic year, brought presentations abroad and capped off the wettest June on record. In 1865, 147 years ago, Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland was published and Brunel's SS Great Eastern laid 2600 miles of the 1865 transatlantic telegraph cable.

The AHRC-funded REACT Knowledge Exchange hub have announced 'Books and Print' as the theme for the next Sandbox development scheme. The scheme will fund six collaborations that develop explorations around this theme in how we read, learn, and publish. Over the next few weeks REACT will draw together the full brief for the call and refine the application process.
