The DCRC team are variously taking holiday and engaging in research activities away from desks and so we are offering an overview of some of our summertime activities in this post. Normal service for weekly blogging will return in September.

Circuses, post-prefixes and the digital (week ending 06072012)

The week ending the 6th of July brought success with apps, international seminars, cogitation of the 'post' digital and torrential rain, as well as marking the 148th week of the operation of the DCRC. 148 years ago, in 1864, Roscoe and Busen reputedly carry out the first 'flashlight photography', the sociologist Max Weber was born and the Clifton Suspension bridge opened, with a posthumous tribute to its designer I.K. Brunel. In week 148, Curzon Memories featured in the London AppCircus, the DCRC collectively (critically) considered the notion of what has been described as 'post' digital and we have been preparing for the Future of the Book.

 Technicity and the Virtual

On the 19th of April I contributed to the 'virtual space' event held by Passenger Films, combining short talks and film screenings that addressed the theme of ‘the virtual’. Passenger Films is a series of public events initiated by Amy Cutler, a cultural geographer at Royal Holloway, and supported by UCL UrbanLab, that combine talks and film screenings. I had the privilege of speaking alongside Rob Kitchin, Director of the National Institute of Regional and Spatial Analysis (Republic of Ireland) and co-author of 'Code/Space: Software and Everyday Life.

A bibliography of the English translations of Bernard Stiegler's work

Following Patrick Crogan's post pointing to Ben Robertson's blog, and courtesy of Daniel Ross’ Twitter stream (and with his permission), here is a complete list of Bernard Stiegler’s work translated into English. Many of these translations are by Ross (notably Acting Out, with our own Patrick Crogan, and For a New Critique of Political Economy, Taking Care of Youth and the Generations and The Decadence of Industrial Democracies). Not included, apparently, are several unpublished works.

 Stiegler, technicity and attention

Patrick Crogan has been convening a reading group concerning the writings of the philosopher Bernard Stiegler, which has been attended by a range of people associated with the DCRC.  We have a blog at: technophilia.wordpress.com (please do visit it), but I thought it was time to post some broad reflections on how Stiegler's work relates to some of the research projects currently underway here at the DCRC.
