Beyond the ‘god-trick’ – Multisensory storytelling and documentary epistemology

Mandy Rose and Tom Livingstone have published a number of outputs reflecting research they’re conducting within the UKRI My World project. This blog post reflects a developing engagement with Multisensory Storytelling, and a recent workshop hosted at the Pervasive Media Studio.
Drawing together our research interests, this paper – delivered at IFM 2024 – offers some preliminary thoughts on the evolution of documentary film-making in the context of the accelerating proliferation of multimodal HCI and experiments in multisensory storytelling. This paper is an exercise sketches out a theoretical framework for our larger research project into Multisensory Storytelling, where we will be investigating how novel technological formats that address our whole range of senses impact established narrative forms (and vice versa).
